At Coach Decker Martial Arts, our Mat Monkeys program introduces young students to the world of martial arts through movement, discipline, and fun. Just as important as learning rolls, balance, and basic techniques is learning martial arts etiquette—the manners and habits that help children grow into respectful, confident martial artists. Today, we want to share the classroom rules we teach our Mat Monkeys and a few important reminders for parents to help keep classes running smoothly.
Why Etiquette Matters in Martial Arts
Martial arts training isn’t only about physical skills. It’s about building character, respect, patience, kindness, and self‑control. These values begin with simple habits on the mat. When children learn to bow, listen, line up, and treat others with courtesy, they’re learning lessons that carry far beyond the dojo.
Classroom Rules for Mat Monkeys
These are the core expectations we teach our youngest students. They help create a safe, focused, and positive learning environment:
- No shoes on the mat
- No food or drink on the mat
- Line up by rank order
- Sit correctly
- Stay quiet during instruction
- Listen without interrupting
- Be respectful of partners
- Be kind to everyone
- Do not leave the mat without permission
- Help keep the mat clean
These rules may seem simple, but they build the foundation for discipline, teamwork, and safety. Our instructors reinforce them gently and consistently, so students learn through repetition and example.

Dojo Etiquette for Judo Students
We also follow traditional Judo dojo etiquette, which teaches students to respect the space, their instructors, and each other:
- Bow when entering and leaving the dojo and the mat
- Wear a clean uniform and maintain good hygiene
- Arrive on time and be ready to train
- Practice safety and control during all drills
- Listen carefully when the instructor is speaking
- Help clean and organize the dojo after class
- Honor the belt system with humility
- Leave ego at the door—everyone is here to learn
As the saying goes, “Judo begins and ends with respect.” We want all of our students to feel proud of the way they carry themselves, both on and off the mat.
A Special Note for Parents
We love having families involved and cheering on their young martial artists. However, during Mat Monkeys classes, we ask that parents please wait quietly outside the classroom. Younger students are easily distracted, and even small sounds or movement can pull their attention away from the lesson. Your cooperation helps us keep the class focused, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.
We truly appreciate your understanding and support. When parents and instructors work together, our Mat Monkeys thrive.
Building Strong Habits, One Class at a Time
Thank you for being part of the Coach Decker Martial Arts family. With your help, we’re teaching our youngest students not just how to move—but how to grow into respectful, confident, and kind martial artists. We look forward to seeing your Mat Monkeys continue to learn, laugh, and shine on the mat.
